Objective: This study aims to describe the experiences of adult women in terms of smoking from the scope of two different approaches. Methods: Qualitative method was used; and the data was gathered by individual interviews. Interpretative phenomenological analysis was used for data analysis. According to the findings, there were three main themes; namely, ‘feelings-thoughts-behaviors related to smoking’, ‘cognitions related to parents’ and ‘cogni-tions related to self’, when the data was analyzed from a cognitive-behavioral stance. From a psychoanalytic point of view, there were also three main themes which were named as ‘smoking with a function of emotion regulation’, ‘smoking as a representation of breast and motherhood’ and ‘issues related to separation’. These findings support the main assumptions of both approaches, and provide deep information in terms of the individuals’ experiences about smoking. It is thought that those themes should be taken into consideration while conducting intervention studies about smoking based on different theoretical frameworks.
