Addiction in a virtual environment: a model test for the mediation role of mindfulness

Objective: In this research, it was aimed to test the model developed on the mediating role of mindfulness in the relationship between problematic smartphone and internet usage in adolescents. Methods: The data were collected using the Smart Phone Dependency Scale, the Child and Adolescent Awareness Scale, and the Internet Dependency Scale. These data were obtained from 308 middle school students in Erzurum province center. Analysis of the research data was done with LISREL 8.54 and SPSS 22 program. The SPSS Macro Process program was used to find the indirect effect estimate of mindfulness in the study. The SPSS Macro Process program was used to calculate the indirect effect estimate of the variables in the study. The statistical significance of the role of the mediator was calculated by the bootstrap test. Findings: The research found that there was a moderate and negative relationship between mindfulness and problematic use of smartphones and the internet. In addition, it was seen that there is a moderate and positive relationship between problem smartphone and internet use. In addition, it has been determined that there is a mindfulness of the relationship between problem smart phone and internet usage in research. Result: Because of the research, the model for the mediating effect of mindfulness has been confirmed. In this context, it can be considered that mindfulness can be used in studies aimed at reducing adolescent use of problematic internet. [Anadolu Psikiyatri Derg 2019; 20(2.000): 153-158]
