Psychotherapy is a kind of medical treatment which has its own theoretical basis, which consists of various methods and which is accepted as an efficient treatment for psychological disorders. In almost all of the theories which support psychotherapy, there are some problems about the validity and reliability of the knowledge thatconstitutes the scientific basis of the practice. This epistemological ambiguity  creates a dilemma in psychotherapy's ethical approval. Second important ethical issue about the practice of psychotherapy is the claim which assumes that a therapist can establish a value-free therapist-patient relationship with his/her patient. Some others claim that the conscious and unconscious values of a therapist will be effective on all of his/her human relationships, in spite of his/her special training in the field. This fact will have some impact on the treatment which can not be objectively assessed. This claim can be ignored and denied easily. The use of power in psychotherapist-patient relationship appears to be another ethical problem in every aspect of the relationship. It is known that the theorists of psychotherapy do not deny the existence of this power relationship, but they expose it as a detail which does not deserve any serious discussion. On the other hand, the critics of psychotherapy insist on the crucial role of power in the psychotherapist-patient relationship. The aim of this article is to call forth an awareness about the ethical issues in the practice of psychotherapy and to direct the different pychotherapy approaches to establish appropriate standards of ethical evaluation which should be in accord with their theoretical affiliations.
